The Brookes Vision

Brookes Publishing believes that all people—regardless of ability, background, learning difference, or life challenge—deserve to meet their potential. This belief and these values inform our publishing program and underlie our interactions with each other and our authors, customers, and business associates.

Our story as an independent publisher began in 1978 with our first books on disability and children at risk. Since then we have expanded our publishing program to include a broader range of issues in child development, education, health, and psychology.

We develop products that are grounded firmly in research and that cultivate and strengthen the skills of our current and future customers. To do this, we must understand, anticipate, and respond to the needs of professionals and providers working with individuals who alone might not reach their full potential.

Our Employees

We are intellectually curious, ambitious, and passionate. We test our skills and abilities by trying new things. Together, we celebrate our successes and learn from our mistakes. We apply our creativity to produce resources that stand out in a competitive marketplace. Our productivity flourishes because we respect each other's diverse talents and share our expertise across all levels of the company.

We place great value on expanding our knowledge. We embrace opportunities to better our company and ourselves through professional development and higher education. Passion for our work grows as our expertise is nurtured and respected.

Our Authors

Our authors work at the forefront of education, psychology, health, and child and family development. They advance understanding in their fields to improve the lives of others. They choose Brookes because we have an unmatched dedication to working closely with them. We invite authors to partner in all aspects of the publishing process to maximize the impact of each other's knowledge. Together, we transform an idea into a useful product.

Our Business Associates

Our business associates are experts in fields related to our work. They are typesetters and printers, booksellers and distributors, not-for-profits and government agencies, publishers and advisors. As we move in new and different directions, they support us by providing access to ideas and technologies, as well as connections to markets and communities. We build relationships with business associates whose expertise and commitment to excellence are compatible with our own.

Our Customers

Our customers work and study in schools, universities, agencies, and hospitals; they participate in their communities; they raise families; they belong to organizations charged with advancing their fields. Their careers require continuous learning; they invest in books and services to cultivate their skills and knowledge. We provide them with resources that are painstakingly edited and free of unnecessary features that increase cost but not quality. They choose Brookes because of our continued commitment to developing relevant and accessible content. Practitioners, educators, researchers, advocates, and parents know and rely on Brookes. They turn to us throughout the course of their work and study because of the distinctive products and reliable service we provide.

Our Values

To accomplish our mission, we must cultivate a workplace in which we are inspired to achieve, encouraged to think and act strategically, and guided by a core set of values:

We foster and thrive in an environment of collaboration. People from every division of the company propose ideas and put forth opinions that are used to inform decisions and strategy. We encourage input from our authors, customers, and business associates and pursue opportunities to work together toward common goals.

We are committed to improving practice by delivering state-of-the-art, high-quality content.

We communicate respectfully and openly. We have an obligation to give each other meaningful, thoughtful, and timely feedback.

We value honesty. We expect the highest level of integrity from each other, our authors, our customers, and our business associates.

We recognize individual and collective accomplishments. Taking the time to share and to celebrate our achievements inspires and strengthens our mission.

Our Future

We are proud of our corporate independence. It allows us to be flexible in our decision making, responsive to change, receptive to risk taking, and committed to the fields in which we publish. We intend to grow. We will pace our growth so that the quality of our work, our customers' satisfaction, and our financial health continue to prosper.

Ultimately, we measure our growth and our success not only by the number of products we publish or sell but also by the positive impact we have on children, adults, families, and communities.
