It is easy to demonstrate that many speakers of English have trouble identifying the discrete segments in words that constitute the inventory of speech sounds or phonemes. Try counting the number of speech sounds in familiar words and identifying the specific sounds within those words. This task will be easier if you try not to think about how the words are spelled. Count the number of phonemes in the following words:
